Speaker: Billie J. Rinaldi (graduate student from Rensselaer Polytechinic Institute in Troy, NY and she is completing her last few months of her PhD)

Title: An Inverse Cellular Automaton Problem

Abstract: This talk will present an introduction to the inverse cellular automaton problem. A portion of the talk will be devoted to reviewing the basics of cellular automata. Interesting applications such as the discrete convex hull problem and encryption of information will be discussed. The talk will briefly present existence theorems and algorithms relevant to the inverse problem. Current work on the characterization of data and filtering of noise by means of the inverse problem will also be discussed.

4 PM in Park 338 with a tea before.

Hosted by Panama Geer.

1.3. Thursday, April 3, 2003. George Dyson

" ‘Words’ coding the orders are handled in the memory just like numbers", announced John von Neumann at the first meeting of the Institute for Advanced Study’s Electronic Computer Project on November 12, 1945. Breaking the distinction between numbers that *mean* things and numbers that *do* things unleashed the revolution that brings us here today. In March of 1953, mathematical biologist Nils Barricelli arrived in Princeton to observe the evolution of numerical organisms within this "artificial universe." How are his creatures doing after fifty years?

Hosted by Deepak Kumar & Tony Rothman.
