Fashion "B.utt, M.awrtyr, C.ostly Gear" (?)

Catherine Rhy '05 Sage Staff Writer

Backed by popular demand (not really), I am creating a fashion section. The first order of this column: I will discuss BMC gear.

The other day, I went to the school bookstore and came eye to pants with a brand-new Bryn Mawr clothing item that had not yet reached its sisters in my closet full of school fashion items. 100% cotton (I am allergic to nylon) capris with "Bryn Mawr" tattooed on the derriere! I've always wanted pants like that, and what better way to express some good old school pride? My friends at home want to join cheerleading teams just to get training shorts with words written on the butt. I knew I had to get the ridiculous $23.95 + tax pants, even knowing that it would result in a showdown with my furious parents when they got the bill.

This specific pair of pants was an especially attractive buy, because it is dark gray with the words printed in stark white. Since the leg-sleeves were long, they take attention away from my thick, covered-up legs and bring people's straying eyes straight to my target buttocks. The catch? The pants look better on a hanger than when they're hanging off of me. I bought them anyway. This seems to happen often when I frequent the bookstore.

Am I a BMC gear-aholic? The possibility did cross my mind once or twice, but I wanted to see if anyone else was battling the same dilemmas. So I asked a few former hallmates whether they had difficulties too. I will keep their identities semi-anonymous by using nicknames.

The result is that although everyone who replied does own some clothing items from the bookstore, each is to a significant degree unsatisfied. Some are participants in school sports programs and receive free and preferable clothing from their teams. 'Tem' and 'Smoriam.' who are on sports teams, feel that it is unnecessary to purchase clothing from the school store and therefore do not; the items are too expensive, not durable, and quite unflattering. They receive tee-shirts and sweatshirts courtesy of the athletic department, manufactured by outside merchants. Says 'Tem,' "The bookstore is like a separate entity from the rest of the college; because there are so few students who actually work there, I feel that they would sell quite a bit more merchandise if there was student input for clothing design and student salespersons."

For the rest of us who do not partake in competitive sports, we have one resort. 'Princess' has one Bryn Mawr College tee-shirt which her mother purchased, so that she would have some college gear. She has no intentions of making future purchases at the college shop because items are too expensive, and sizes do not fit well. She admits that all college clothes are expensive, though. "I don't find myself at all wanting to buy clothing really badly when I go to the bookstore."

'Rued' has a few fashion items from the bookshop, and she enjoys them because they are comfortable, cozy and simple. She bought her family numerous items and does seem to like the bookstore's offerings in general. But she also asserts self-control. She often takes a look at the clothes but does not always feel compelled to buy them. They are "quite expensive and [the Bookshop] often runs out of sizes quickly."

My deduction, after all of this? If you're a non-athletic, Bryn Mawr gear-loving girl like me, scrounge through the free-box in your dorm before heading for the bookstore. Or heed 'Smoriam's' wise words: "I don't buy from the school store. Too expensive, doesn't last long enough, kind of a waste of time. Time is money, and I work for my money; therefore, it would be a waste of time for me to go and buy expensive clothes that I don't think will last. It would be silly to pay for." Got it?

Good luck with the new school-year fashion, everybody!

Sex and the City inspired me to put up this online quiz for you readers; have a sexy time! Which Sex and the City Player Are You?

(Where is the quiz? Does it relate to fashion? If not, maybe we could stick it in a different section?)
