The following image is an example of a "Power Law" plot. Across the bottom is, say, the magnitude of changes to a system. Along the y axis is the frequency of those magnitudes. Notice that the scales are in log values, thus making the curve a straight line. This might be a plot of the magnitude and frequency of earthquakes, or the size and frequency of avalanches on a small sand pile.
