If you are interested in how guidance counselors and teachers can encourage women in CS, you might consider this. The deadline was either yesterday, or last Friday, but maybe you can still make it. The registration page was still up today. -Doug] Dear Teachers and Guidance Counselors: The Advancing Women in Engineering (AWE) program and the Department of Computer and Information Science (CIS) are pleased to invite you to our second Guidance Counselor and Teacher Day to Encourage Women to Study Computer Science on Friday, November 12, 2010. We hope that you will join us to learn about computer science and how you can encourage your students to be the computer science and engineering students of the future! Workshops include what is computer science, career opportunities, admissions requirements, curriculum and how we can help your students right now. Tentative Schedule for November 12, 2010 8:30-9am Breakfast and Registration 9-10am Welcome and What is Computer Science 10-10:15am BREAK 10:15-11:15am Choose a session: Admissions Requirements OR Scratch Demonstration 11:15-12:15pm Tours of Engineering Labs 12:15-1pm Lunch with students 1-2pm Women in Computer Science Student Panel 2-2:30pm Dessert Reception Students have consistently reported that one of the leading factors that brought them to Computer Science and Engineering is being encouraged by a teacher or guidance counselor. We hope to spend the day showing you some of the many exciting opportunities that are available to those who study computer science and engineering. You will hear from talented Penn students, faculty, and staff who will share everything from why they chose to study computer science to what the future holds for those who chose this dynamic field. We are pleased that the National Center for Women in Information Technology (NCWIT) and Microsoft Research have generously supported this program and therefore there is no charge to you. Registration is required before November 8, 2010 and is available on our website at www.seas.upenn.edu/awe/ncwit-grant.php We are currently working to get this day approved for Act 48 credit and will have information available about that when you arrive on campus. Based on feedback from last year, we changed the schedule slightly and therefore are happy to have you return if you attended in the past. We hope you will join us for this exciting day. Please feel free to share the invitation with other interested colleagues in your school. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at 215-573-6487 or mgrab@seas.upenn.edu Michele Grab Director, Advancing Women in Engineering School of Engineering and Applied Science University of Pennsylvania -- Douglas S. I am in touch with a person who works near Haverford who wants people to make a website for his organization. A group of us started working on this a while ago, but it has been going slowly because we don't have much time to work, and we think it would be better for his organization if there were more people working, so it could be completed. It's a pretty simple website: we're using Python to manipulate a database (SQL is easy to learn; don't worry if you don't already know it) and generate pages. You could learn whatever you needed very fast (and be paid for learning it). If you're interested, please get in touch with me and I can give you the details. The current deal is that we're paid $17.50 an hour, which is much more than any campus job. I need to send him a proposal by this Friday, so let me know soon.
