If any of you are interested in working with girls and computer science/technology this next school year, please feel free to contact Laura Blankenship. Or if you know of someone, please pass this opportunity on. Thanks! -Doug] -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Volunteer opportunities Date: Fri, 3 Jun 2011 11:30:19 -0400 From: Laura Blankenship To: Hi Doug, Here are some of the opportunities we have for Bryn Mawr students interested in volunteering with us. Not only is volunteering a help to us and a good opportunity for our girls to see female role models, but your students will have the opportunity to learn more about CS in the K-12 context. After-school enrichment, Exploring Computer Science: begins the week of Sept. 26th and ends the week before Thanksgiving, exact day to be determined. Runs from 3:15-4:45. We will probably run this program all three trimesters, so there will be opportunities throughout the year. Middle-school Creative Computing Club: begins roughly the first week of October, continues through end of the year. It meets every other week from 11:10-11:50. We've extended it through lunch in the past when we've worked in the Bryn Mawr CS Lab to meet 11:10-12:30. Middle-school robotics team: We are building a robotics team to compete in the VEX robotics competition. This is the same competition we do in the Upper School, just scaled down a bit for the Middle School level. The team will meet after school at least 3 times/week, perhaps more often as needed. The first competion is November 11 in Newtown Square. Here's the web site with the schedule: http://robotevents.com/robot-competitions/vex-robotics-competition Students wishing to volunteer on a regular basis will need to get special clearances to work with kids. I can help with that process, and will pay the fees.
