The conference is held in Portland, Oregon and will take place the second week of November. If you want more information, you can read about the conference online. If you are interested in attending, please contact Cara at ctakemoto@brynmawr.edu or Mel at mshafer@brynmawr.edu by Thursday 5pm so we can try to put together a group of Bryn Mawr students. Thanks! MIT LL is interested in recruiting students from Bryn Mawr College for full-time and intern positions. All science, computer science, and math majors with American citizenship are encouraged to apply. Join us at 4pm this Friday the 16th to discuss what its like to be an employee/intern at Lincoln, what they look for in candidates, and how you can begin the application process. There will be food! We will also hear from Sarah Nelson '12, Cara Takemoto '12, and Caitlyn Clabaugh '13 as they discuss their experiences at Lincoln this past summer. Ashley Gavin (Bryn Mawr '10) who is a current employee will also tell us about her experiences. The tea will take place in the Intro Lab. We also encourage other students who conducted research this summer to come and discuss their work. I hope to see you all there! Dr Ryder has "worn many of the hats" we academics wear --- she has done important research (including one of the most cited research papers at the top programming language research conference), taught undergraduate and graduate students, run a major CS academic department, and performed several important service roles in ACM (the "Association for Computing Machinery", the major professional society for computer scientists). Dr. Ryder will be primarily talking about life in academia (see abstract below). If you have a possible interest in an academic career, or are just curious to know more about it, please join us for her talk. Bi-Co faculty are often happy to talk to you about life as a professor at a small college, and Dr. Ryder can fill in the full picture by talking about larger institutions. There may also be a chance to join her for dinner (or lunch on Thursday), if you want to talk to her about any part of her work or career. So please mark this date on your calendar and watch for further information. Dave Wonnacott -------- Why choose an academic career? Dr. Barbara G. Ryder J. Byron Maupin Professor of Engineering Head - Department of Computer Science Virginia Tech Students encounter professors in class, in office hours, in co-curricular activities and sometimes on campus at the coffee shop, but what is the totality of a professor?s job at university? I will address the different aspects of life as an academic, its rewards and its shortcomings, from the perspective of having taught almost 30 years at large state universities (i.e., Rutgers University, Virginia Tech). Discussion and questions welcome. We will hear from students who interned there this summer, and all are encouraged to attend to listen and talk about their own research as well (if you want). Thanks, and I hope you all can stop by! As a creative coder, he continues to search, but within motifs that extend beyond the physical, natural world. In this talk, Ira will present an overview of his creative journey, visually telling the story of how his medium transmuted from paint to code. He will also feature some of his recent work, including Protobytes (studies in artificial life) and visualization in the digital humanities. Short Bio: With an eclectic background combining elements of painting and programming, Ira Greenberg has been a painter, 2D and 3D animator, print designer, web and interactive designer/developer, programmer, art director, creative director, managing director, art professor, and author. He is also one of the leading experts on the Art and Code movement, a broader effort to bring computers and art together for stunning visual effects that apply in a wide range of academic disciplines, most of them outside of the natural sciences. Ira holds a BFA from Cornell University and an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. Currently, Ira is Associate Professor at Southern Methodist University (SMU), where he holds a joint position in Meadow School of Art and Lyle School of Engineering and is the Director of a new interdisciplinary media laboratory-- Center of Creative Computation. Volunteers are needed to work with 6th-8th graders at Rhoads Middle School who are participating in a First Lego League after-school program. This robotics program is designed to get children excited about science and technology -- and teach them valuable employment and life skills. The club meets on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:15-4:45. Volunteers can come on one or more days to assist the children in getting ready for three competitions during the months of November and January. Volunteers should enjoy working with 10-13 year olds and building things with Legos. Programming skills are not required! Volunteers will learn as they go. Van transportation can be provided if we can a few recruit volunteers who are van certified. Vans would depart from campus at 2:45 and return by 5:30. Want to learn more?
