From eeaton at cs.brynmawr.edu Thu Feb 2 12:24:41 2012 From: eeaton at cs.brynmawr.edu (Eric Eaton) Date: Thu Feb 2 12:56:48 2012 Subject: [Compsci] Invited Talk on Polynomiography, Thurs. Feb 16 @ 2:30pm in Park Science Rm 338 Message-ID: The Bryn Mawr College Computer Science Department is pleased to invite you to attend: An Invited Talk The Fine Art and Science of Polynomiography: Learn to Love Polynomials You Don't Have to be a Mathematician to become a Polynomiographer Bahman Kalantari Professor of Computer Science, Rutgers University http://www.polynomiography.com Thursday, February 16, 2012 2:30pm - 3:30pm Park Science Bldg, Room 338 Abstract: Polynomiography is a creative computer visualization that renders spectacular 2D images of a polynomial equation. It makes use of mathematical properties of iterative systems for solving a polynomial equation. Working with Polynomiography software is similar to learning to work with a sophisticated camera: one needs to learn the basics, the rest is up to the photographer. Students can quickly learn to use the software and once the basics of algorithm and math are explained, through experimentation and playful discovery they learn to be creative, finding ways to connect it to many subjects. I will exhibit many sample polynomiographs and describe many applications of Polynomiography in math and science, education, art, design, architecture, even fashion. In particular, I will speak of educational experiences with Polynomiography at high school, undergraduate and graduate level courses. In an interdisciplinary undergraduate course at Rutgers based on Polynomiography, the goal is to connect art, mathematics, and algorithms, while promoting creativity of different kinds. The visual strength of Polynomiography and its basic foundation has attracted students from various backgrounds. Previous student projects based on Polynomiography include such diverse applications as: Art, Dance, Linguistics, Psychology, Math, Education, Computer Graphics, Computer Science, Symbology, Music, Architecture, Ecology, Neuroscience, Special Education, Chemistry, and Religion. Polynomiography has also inspired the discovery of new properties in algebra, geometry and computational geometry as well as novel applications that give rise to new and challenging research problems. -------------- next part -------------- Skipped content of type multipart/mixed From cclabaugh at brynmawr.edu Mon Feb 6 19:05:31 2012 From: cclabaugh at brynmawr.edu (Caitlyn Clabaugh) Date: Mon Feb 6 19:05:36 2012 Subject: [Compsci] RoboCup Meeting Thursday Night In-Reply-To: Message-ID: <4ff09e0f-38c6-420a-9dce-1191cdf3f1e9@ganesh.brynmawr.edu> Hello everyone! If you are still interested in the RoboCup Team, we will be holding our first weekly meeting this Thursday night from 7:30-8:30 in the AI Lab (rm. 234). At this meeting we are going to test our Nao robots' health, run the webots soccer simulator, and start getting our hands dirty in the code base! If you are new to the team, this is a very important meeting to attend as we will cover all the basics so that you can start contributing your own code. There will be snacks like last time :) Hope to see everyone there! The REU program is an 11-week summer program that gives undergraduates a taste of research with the hope that they will pursue graduate studies in computer science. We have a wide variety of exciting projects suitable for a large range of students. Our program also includes several additional opportunities including (a) 4-Day Boot Camp, giving students the computing skills needed for their specific research projects (2) ?Meet the Faculty? Lunch Series (3) Research Skills Seminar, to help prepare students to apply to and succeed in graduate school and (4) a Research Symposium, to present their work to faculty and peers at the end of the summer. The program is open to all US citizens and residents who have a strong background in computer science. We encourage all students with an interest in computer science (majors, minors, educated hobbyists) to apply. The application deadline for the program is February 24, 2012. I am running a program called SIGCSE "Experience It!" [1] sponsored by the Institute for Personal Robots in Education [2]. We would leave Philly on Wed Feb 29 afternoon, and be back in Philly on Sat Mar 3 afternoon. You would help us introduce educators to robots, and help them (the humans) learn what is useful in the classroom with robots. We'll train you, so no experience with robots is necessary. You would also get to attend some talks by computer science educators, and meet people from all over the world in CS. I would cover all costs (flight, room, food etc). Can you help me? If you can please send me your full name, date of birth (for the flight info), and if you can leave Wed afternoon. Outreach Program for Women internships also include graphic design, documentation, and marketing projects. As with Google Summer of Code, the applicants need to get in touch with individual GNOME projects ahead of time to decide which project they are interested in working on and make a small contribution to the project. https://live.gnome.org/GnomeWomen/OutreachProgram2012 Please consider applying for these programs, encourage someone else to apply, or help spread the word by forwarding this e-mail to any student and technical women groups! I am happy to introduce the new MS in Information Technology Auditing and Cyber-Security at the Fox School of Business and Management at Temple University. The program started its first cohort in January and we are looking to start our second this coming August. Our 10 course, 30 credit, 11 month program is designed to build the student's knowledge of and experience in the auditing of information systems. Our program introduces the students to business and technical issues and skills needed to professionally run an organization's information systems. It also prepares the student to pass the Certified Information System Auditor examination, giving them an international credential in the expanding area of risk assurance. Attached is an informational flyer containing more details about the program. Also, please feel free to visit our official ITACS website: http://fox.temple.edu/itacs If you think it worthwhile, I would be happy to guest lecture on the field and the opportunities it offers at your convenience. If you have any students who you think might be interested, please have them contact me via email or just give me a call. I would be happy to chat with them about our program. -- Richard Y.
