I began following the instructions at http://wiki.cs.brynmawr.edu/?page=Gramps-tk and encountered some errors. I joined this mailing list to see about getting some help. The first thing I did was read the archives. I noticed the last archived messages were in 2006. Is this project still active at all? I recently updated myself on the state of play here and it looks to me like the core Gramps team has abandoned or at least softened the virulent anti-cross platform attitude that they had the last time I checked into things. Because of this, I think there is now cross platform (ie platforms other the Linux) work going on as part of the main Gramps project, making gramps-tk largely irrelevant. I wouldn't put it exactly this way, but the original idea of Gramps-tk was interpreted as an attempt to get GRAMPS on Windows, and they had no interest in that. Since then, GRAMPS now works "natively" on Windows via gtk, but the original problem still exists: GRAMPS is still tied too closely to a GUI. For example, to run GRAMPS's command line interface, you still need to be able to be in an environment that could open a gtk window, even though it doesn't. But, it is true that a new set of developers are working on GRAMPS, and modularity is coming. More slowly than I originally would have guessed, but that's because we're working at our own pace, and a new version of GRAMPS is almost ready. So, I'd encourage you to join the GRAMPS development team, and help us figure out how to separate the pieces. I still imagine: - a tk interface - a web interface We're not that far away. -Doug > Tom From seekerbill at comcast.net Sun Feb 24 09:10:05 2008 From: seekerbill at comcast.net (Bill House) Date: Sun Feb 24 09:10:14 2008 Subject: [Gramps-tk] Re: gramps-tk Digest, Vol 6, Issue 2 In-Reply-To: <200802231700.m1NH03D4003567@emergent.brynmawr.edu> References: <200802231700.m1NH03D4003567@emergent.brynmawr.edu> Message-ID: <47C17ABD.7000502@comcast.net> gramps-tk-request@emergent.brynmawr.edu wrote: > Send gramps-tk mailing list submissions to > gramps-tk@emergent.brynmawr.edu > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://emergent.brynmawr.edu/mailman/listinfo/gramps-tk > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > gramps-tk-request@emergent.brynmawr.edu > > You can reach the person managing the list at > gramps-tk-owner@emergent.brynmawr.edu > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of gramps-tk digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. I only know the procedural language dbase III+ and a character based input/output environment. Furthermore, programming is not my primary function, so I have to do my studies on my own time. My primary function is accounting, auditing and tax. I am really interested learning more about the nuts and bolts of gramps and the tools used to create it, because although I am interested in genealogy, and I have some enhancement ideas for gramps, the data bases and concepts employed in gramps seem to be similar to accounting requirements which I might find useful as well. Gramps appealed to me because the interpreted environment is one I am comfortable with, and the python language seems to be fairly straightforward. I am having difficulty getting up to speed in the windowing/object environment. Bottom line, I think it would be unfair to join a project where I would be more a liability rather than an asset. On the other hand, I think I am a quick study, and I am willing. The gramps-tk project interested me because I thought it was gramps lite and I might be able to use it to learn some of the basics. The wiki said that the project was intended useful to students. I guess if you would like to suggest some relevant tutorials, I will begin to work on those. Most of the work, at least on GRAMPS, involves many other things: testing, writing documentation, translation, and giving feedback for new ideas and tweaks. (On the other hand, Python is a lot like dbase. I started out with Foxpro when it was competing with dbase III+... dbase and Python have a lot in common.) > I am really interested learning more about the nuts and bolts of gramps > and the tools used to create it, because although I am interested in > genealogy, and I have some enhancement ideas for gramps, the data bases > and concepts employed in gramps seem to be similar to accounting > requirements which I might find useful as well. > > Gramps appealed to me because the interpreted environment is one I am > comfortable with, and the python language seems to be fairly > straightforward. May I suggest a couple of links: http://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php?title=Portal:Developers http://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php?title=Getting_Started_with_GRAMPS_3 Also, the new version has a new manual in a wiki: http://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php?title=Gramps_3.0_Wiki_Manual Anyone can help write tutorials, FAQs, and other helpful text. I strongly encourage anyone to get involved this way first, then learn the technical parts as you go. I'm a teacher, and hope to make GRAMPS a good place for students, too. I began using dBase in 1982 and Foxbase on Xenix in 1986. Used it up until June of 2006 when my SCO system went modulo on me and overwrote the boot sectors of my raid array. (Microsoft had purchased Foxpro, killed the Unix version and I had nowhere else to go.) So I am comfortable in the linux environment, know just enough about windows to get by, and want to update myself. > May I suggest a couple of links: > > http://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php?title=Portal:Developers > > http://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php?title=Getting_Started_with_GRAMPS_3 > Also, the new version has a new manual in a wiki: > http://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php?title=Gramps_3.0_Wiki_Manual > > Anyone can help write tutorials, FAQs, and other helpful text.
